2008 Fantasy Football Draft Kit
|
|
|
Sleepers
- These are either well-known, established
fantasy players who are projected to do much better
than their 2007 statistics or players who broke out
last season and could be the new fantasy football
studs. Basically you can get these players at a lower
draft price than their value will actually be (bargains).
Breakouts
- Most true sleepers fall under this category. They
have shown potential in the past and this may be their
year.
Rookies
- These are either rookies that have no previous fantasy
record but could start for your team and be star. |
|
|
Sleepers: Quarterbacks
|
| Jay Cutler - Broncos
- Cutler took the necessary step in 2007 that shows he
can be a fantasy-elite quarterback. In his first two seasons
Cutler had a 29-19 touchdown-to-interception ratio, which
is amazing for any quarterback in their first two seasons.
Rookie sensation Brandon Marshall gives Cutler the stud
receiver he needs to take the final step. In addition,
the Bronco's made an effort to add depth to the receiver
core by adding veterans Keary Colbert and Sammie Parker
as well as drafting Eddie Royal with the 11th pick in
the 2nd-round. Cutler will be ready to shine in '08. |
| Marc Bulger - Rams
- Don't let Bulger's awful 2007 stats scare you away from
drafting him as a mid-level starting fantasy quarterback.
He is only 1 year removed from his 4,301 yards, 24 TD's
and 8 interceptions. Injuries to both Bulger and the Rams
offensive line caused the breakdown in 2007. Expect Bulger
to return to the neighborhood of 3,500 yards and 25 TD's
in 2008. |
| Jake Delhomme - Panthers
- Delhomme stats were down in 2006 and he missed most
of 2007 with a serious injury. So why is he a sleeper?
Well, he had Tommy John surgery in the off season and
apparently will be ready for camp and in fact his teammates
said his arm was stronger now. This is a common effect
generally associated with major league pitchers. Couple
that with the Panthers addressing there desperate need
for a running game (Jonathan Stewart) and their strong
receiving core ( Steve Smith, D.J. Hackett, Muhsin Muhammad
and Dwayne Jarrett) and you have the recipe for a big
comeback season for Delhomme in 2008. |
| Jesse Campbell - Redskins
- He got better week-after-week showing that he is a legitimate
NFL quarterback. The Redskins #1 pick of 2005 is coming
into his third season and could blossom into a top-flight
fantasy quarterback, especially if the top wide receiver
draft picks, Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly come through. |
|
Sleepers: Wide Receivers
|
| Lee Evans - Bills
- The breakout receiver of 2006 fell in 2007, mainly do
to the lack of quarterback play. Trent Edwards is likely
going to start in 2008 and he should take a step and with
that step Evans should return to his Fantasy All-Star
status. |
| Jerry Porter - Jaguars
- Year-after-year he is mentioned by many to be a future
star, though we have never been a fan because he was stuck
in Oakland. Now that Porter has moved to Jacksonville,
who has an excellent young quarterback in David Garrard,
and a desperate need for a top-flight receiver, the time
for Porter's stardom may have finally arrived. |
| Chris Chambers
- Chargers - Chambers is a
big-play receiver who has been stuck with average quarterbacks
throughout his career until being traded to San Diego.
Yet twice he managed 11 touchdown receptions in his career.
He is the man in San Diego and should be slated to have
a big 2008. |
| Javon Walker
- Raiders - Injuries have
almost ruined this one-time Fantasy All-Star's career.
But he will be back in 2008 and healthy. The question
will be can JaMarcus Russell get him the ball. If he can
Walker could be an excellent second or third receiver
at a very cheap price. |
|
Sleepers: Running Backs
|
| Laurence
Maroney - Patriots - Injuries plagued the talented
Maroney for much of the season until the end when was
healthy and quietly rushed for 306 yards and 4 touchdowns
when the Patriots were closing out their undefeated season.
Maroney then rushed for another 280 yards and 3 touchdowns
in the playoffs and Super Bowl. Based on these numbers,
Maroney could be in for a huge year with the Patriots
in 2008, if he can remain healthy. |
| Rudi Johnson
- Bengals - We must assume that 2007 was a fluke
for Johnson after 3 consecutive and consistent seasons
where he averaged nearly 1,400 yards and 12 touchdowns
per season. He was injured much of the year, but even
when he was healthy he was bad, averaging just 2.9 yards
a gain. 2008 will be a fresh start for Johnson and the
Bengals and Rudi should get much closer to his 2006 1,309
yards than an '07 repeat. |
| Julius
Jones - Seahawks - The veteran is out of the shadow
of Marion Barber, in his prime and has a big offensive
line to run behind. Jones flashed brilliance early in
his career only to flatten out after an injury. It is
quite possible that he resurrects his career in Seattle
has a very good 2008 season. |
