Preseason Report: Running Backs

With week three of preseason in the bag we can finally look into some stats and get a reading of the future fantasy potential of some of the question marks of the 2011 fantasy season.
Some observed notes include:
The top five – Pretty simple, but some very good talent nevertheless. 49er’s Kendall Hunter leads the pack with 174 yards with 1 TD and equally as important is he is the back up to often-injured Frank Gore.
Kendall HunterBoth Redskin backs, rookie Rey Helu (173 yards 0 TD’s) and Tim Hightower (170 yards, 2 TD’s).  Both are moving up the draft board, though Helu has been far lower and many times a free agent. Number four Stevan Ridley of the Patriots is in a crowded situation, nevertheless the Patriots drafted two running backs with high picks with the intention of them playing and at any point Ridley could get some role in the offense and build from there. He is worth watching at this point unless you are in a deeper league. Number five Ben Tate (147 yards, 1 TD) has looked good and he is the back up to #1 overall ranked Arian Foster.
At number 16 is the Chargers Ryan Mathews. Mathews has many fantasy owners questioning his value and he answered those to a certain degree by looking strong in practice and running for 109 yards @ 5.7 ypc and 1 TD. He is beginning to look like the real deal and should be moving up the draft boards.
Number 22 Felix Jones has rushed for 99 yards @ 6.6 ypc with 1 TD. He will be better than he was in 2010.
Number 25 Knowshon Moreno is in the same boat as Jones. He rushed for 978 yards @ 4.9 ypc.
Number 25 Marion Barber has rushed for 96 yards @ 4.6. While he is not a threat to start he could get some good yardage and goal line carries.
Number 7 Armond Smith of the Cleveland browns has rushed for 145 yards with 1 TD @ 7.3 ypc in the absence of Peyton Hillis and Montario Hardesty. He is one to at least watch.
Jamie Harper at number 6 might be a decent pick up for the first couple of weeks until Johnson is signed. Javon Ringer’s has a hip pointer so Harper just may start.
