Preseason Report: Running Backs

Tim-HightowerRedskins: Tim Hightower, Ray Helu, Ryan Torain

The clear leader here is Tim Hightower.  The job seems to be his and he makes a great sleeper pick, but he will share time (as is the case for most RB’s these days).

Ryan Torain hasn’t practiced since breaking his hand on Aug. 3, but should return to full duty this week.  This could shake things up.

Rookie Ray Helu rushed for 101 yards on 14 carries against the Colts.  He too is draftable.

Hightower is the clear leader at this point, but all three should be watched and are worth owning if you have a spot on your roster.

Dolphins: Daniel Thomas, Reggie Bush

Thomas rushed 12 times for 51 yards and a touchdown in the Dolphins 20-10 win over the Panthers.  Bush carried 8 times for 48 yards.

There really isn’t a battle here, it is just a matter of when to draft them.  Thomas looks like the real deal and should top 1,100 yards and between 5 and 9 touchdowns.  Bush could excel in a PPR league, but will also be hit and miss throughout the season.

Saints: Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles

This is Ingram’s job to lose and thus far he has looked good.  He rushed 7 times for 25 yards and a touchdown against the Texans while Thomas rushed for 33 yards on 6 carries.  Sproles added 24 yards on 3 carries.

It might get a little messy early on being that the Saints love to spread the ball around, but Ingram’s talent should show as the weeks go on and he should take over as the dominate back before week 8.  He is worth a higher than expected gamble in the draft.

Chargers: Ryan Mathews, Matt Tolbert

Mathews carried 7 times for 35 yards and a touchdown against the Cowboys while Tolbert carried the ball 5 times for 16 yards.

The situation is similar to the Saints in that if Mathews plays up to his talent, he will be the clear #1 back.  Either way Tolbert will cut in his goalline carries, but Mathews still has the potential to be a top-flight fantasy running back and is worth a roll of the dice in this years draft.

Other Notables:
Beanie Wells – The job is all his and he looks pretty good.  He could be inline for a very good fantasy season.

Ben Tate – The Texans #2 pick in 2010 looked like a Foster clone with his 9 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown.  Foster owners should have him for insurance.

Stevan Ridley – The rookie is no threat to start, but he is looking good and could make some noise down the line.  He rushed for 64 yards and 2 touchdowns in week one and 84 yards in week 2.  The injury to other rookie, Shane Vereen, has opened the door. Ridley will fight Woodhead for backup playing time.
